It has been another great week! The students have adjusted well to the new procedures and expectations in our class. I am looking forward to next week when we begin our first chapter book, Freckle Juice, by Judy Blume. We will also begin spelling, aka WORD SORTS. I will send a note home with your child on Monday to explain more about the Word Sorts and the homework that goes with it each night. Finally, I will post pictures of my afternoon group as soon as I receive the media release forms from them. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I look forward to seeing the children on Monday!

Tuesday Folders
This is just a reminder to let you know Tuesday Folders went home today. The folders contain students' work, forms for free and reduced lunches, and notes from Mrs. Palm and me. You can expect this folder to come home each Tuesday that we are in school. It needs to be returned the following school day. The folders for my morning class are blue, and the folders for my afternoon class are red.
We now have enough shoe boxes, so there is no need to send in more. Thanks to all of you who sent them in for our use.
This week we began our reading workshops. Each student is working on alphabetizing, completing a scavenger hunt using the dictionary, writing a journal entry, creating a story using fortunately and unfortunately, and practicing fluency and comprehension. Next week, we will begin our first chapter book.
Next week students will also begin spelling. It will be completed differently than what you have seen in the past. Rather than simply memorizing a list of words, students will work with their words the entire week identifying patterns and making connections. They will use them in their writings and will identify them in their texts. Each student will be given a list that is on his/her current level rather than everyone in the classroom receiving the same list. Research has shown that spelling is much like math. Students must master each level before moving on to the next one. As progress is made, your student will then advance to the next spelling level. I will send a note home next week explaining what your child will do with his/her words for homework.
For your information, these are some important dates that are quickly approaching:

Thank you for making my job so enjoyable by sending such amazing children to me. It truly is a blessing to be working with them.

First Week
What a fabulous week! We have worked on procedures, expectations, and getting to know each other. The students have also completed a couple of assessments to give me an idea of where to begin with them. I have already been quite impressed with this group of students and look forward to the wonderful year that is in store.
There are a few tidbits that might be of interest to you: First, students in my A.M. group will have P.E. on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Students in my P.M. group will have P.E. on Wednesday and Friday. Second, I will not be sending an assigned snack list home. However, you may send snacks to school anytime you would like. I am discovering the students are getting quite hungry halfway through our morning class. One of the parents and I have provided snacks for this week, but I welcome any others in the future. Finally, we are still in need of shoe boxes. The boxes need to be from adult sized shoes as we are using them to store our supplies (ie: journal, vocabulary book, pencils, crayons, and clipboard). We only need eight more boxes.
Several forms were sent home this week, and I am proud to say that I already have most of them returned. Just as a reminder, there was a packet of forms from the front office that included forms such as emergency information, media release, chapel permission, etc. as well as two forms from me. There was also a student handbook that went home in the Tuesday Folder (blue for the P.M. class and red for the A.M. class). You need to sign and return the page that is marked in the book.
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with your child this year. It truly is going to be a great year!
