We now have enough shoe boxes, so there is no need to send in more. Thanks to all of you who sent them in for our use.
This week we began our reading workshops. Each student is working on alphabetizing, completing a scavenger hunt using the dictionary, writing a journal entry, creating a story using fortunately and unfortunately, and practicing fluency and comprehension. Next week, we will begin our first chapter book.
Next week students will also begin spelling. It will be completed differently than what you have seen in the past. Rather than simply memorizing a list of words, students will work with their words the entire week identifying patterns and making connections. They will use them in their writings and will identify them in their texts. Each student will be given a list that is on his/her current level rather than everyone in the classroom receiving the same list. Research has shown that spelling is much like math. Students must master each level before moving on to the next one. As progress is made, your student will then advance to the next spelling level. I will send a note home next week explaining what your child will do with his/her words for homework.
For your information, these are some important dates that are quickly approaching:
- September 6 - No School
- September 21 & 22 - Parent/Teacher Conferences
- September 24 - No School
Thank you for making my job so enjoyable by sending such amazing children to me. It truly is a blessing to be working with them.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Scrivener
